The ridicule women around Our lady of Mount Carmel community hospital in Malawi’s Mchinji district face for delivering at home or on the way to hospital might be history, thanks to a 9 million Kwacha maternity waiting hostel.

Sister in charge for Our lady of Mount Carmel community hospital Jovita Protazio told Zodiak online that women will be coming good time before labour, thereby restoring their dignity, which was lost due to numerous deliveries outside the facility.

“Their respect is now restored as  women are safe from public ridicule, hence they will be waiting in a conducive and comfortable environment some days before delivery,” said Protazio.

She said instead of buying other consumables, management agreed to construct the 24 bed capacity maternity waiting hostel, which she said will benefit more generations.

Director of reproductive health in the ministry of health Funny Kachali commended Our Lady of Mount Carmel community hospital management for good usage of the initial facility support from RBF.

She said:- “We at ministry commend RBF for this support which has also benefited several facilities under the program in different ways.”

RBF country director Matthew Nviiri said they have so far disbursed 70 million Kwacha towards initial health facility support.

“Under this initiative, hospitals are given the chance of how to use their money, and we commend Our lady of Mount Carmel community hospital for their innovation, which other facilities need to emulate,” said Mviiri.

RBF under the program also provide funds for construction, medical equipment, incentives to motivate health workers, conditional cash transfer to pregnant women among others, in a bid to complement Malawi government efforts of improving maternal and child health.

Over 2 billion kwacha has been disbursed already for all these internventions
