Police in Ntcheu have arrested 23 parents and learners a the aftermath of Monday morning protests against ongoing teachers strike over unpaid leave grants.

Ntcheu police public relations officer Hastings Chigaru said out of the 23, 15 are learners from Kabwazi primary and community day secondary schools.

“We have charged the 23 with an offence of intentionally endangering of persons travelling by road contrary to section 237 of the penal code,” said Chigaru.

It took police intervention to calm the situation at Bawi stores which was impassable Monday morning.

Pupils in different parts of Malawi like Blantyre also protested against the teachers strike.

Meanwhile, minister of information Nicholas Dausi has pleaded with the teachers to get back to work, saying they are getting their leavegrants.
