As cases of attacks on albinos keep on increasing, Police in Balaka district are hunting for unknown criminals who attempted to abduct a eleven year old albino on the dawn of Thursday.
Balaka police publicist sub inspector Joseph Sauka said the boy was attacked and injected with unknown substance as he went to answer the call of nature outside the house.
Sub inspector Sauka said the incident occurred in Chongolera village Sub Traditional Authority Matola in Balaka district.
“The attackers closed his mouth and injected him with unknown substance as he returned to the house, but his in-law heard the scramble and rushed to his rescue,” said Sub Inspector Sauka.
The victim was referred to Balaka District Hospital where he was treated as an outpatient.
This is the first reported case of attack on albinos in Balaka district.
Sauka added that:- “We assure the general public that police is working tirelessly to protect albinos, but we appeal for joint efforts in curbing the malpractice.”
The United Nations recently condemned the sharp increase this year in attacks on albinos in East Africa, especially in Malawi and Tanzania.
Many people with albinism are reportedly living in fear as a result of these attacks, with some dropping out of school according to UN.
