Nine police officers from E company of the police mobile service have died after a vehicle they were travelling in on presidential convoy, hit a tree saturday afternoon in Balaka.
Eight died on spot and one on the way to Zomba hospital where he was refereed to.
The driver failed to negotiate a corner upon reaching Chiyendausiku trading center in between Balaka town and Liwonde.
The presidential convoy was going to Machinga where president Peter Mutharika attended installation ceremony of traditional authority Kapoloma.
They were nine officers in a Toyota land cruiser registration number
MP 2252 of eastern region police headquarters.
They joined president Peter Mutharika’s convoy at Chiingeni road block, taking over from their central region counterparts.
Balaka police public relations officer sub inspector Joseph Sauka confirmed that the eight bodies are at Balaka district hospital mortuary.
He asked for more time to provide particulars of the deceased and other details.
